GAME UI Prototyping

Skills: Graphic Design, Motion Design, UI Prototyping
Tools: After Effects, Illustrator, Photoshop

Overview

This project is a high-fidelity motion graphics and UI/UX prototyping focused on crafting a diegetic heads-up display (HUD) for starfighter dogfights. Modeled after the authentic Star Wars universe aesthetics, the project simulates real-time target acquisition, flight telemetry tracking, and combat feedback for tracking an enemy TIE Interceptor.

Concept

  • Functional Immersion over Decoration: Instead of treating HUD elements as static or purely aesthetic overlays, every reticle, gauge, and readout serves a direct tactical purpose—delivering real-time distance tracking (688m [Tracing...]), energy management, speed telemetry, and action prompts (_ENGAGE, _// RELOAD).

  • Diegetic Starfighter Dogfight: The design simulates a combat interface embedded directly within the pilot's viewport, bridging the gap between cinematic storytelling and gameplay-driven micro-interactions.

Art Direction & Visual Design

01. Color Palette

  • Amber / Safety Orange: Acts as the primary high-priority combat color for target locks, tracking reticles, and critical alerts to instantly draw the pilot's focus toward enemy movement.

  • Muted Gold / Ochre: Dedicated to secondary technical scales, speed meters, and framing gauges along the top and side margins.

  • Tactical Green Accents: Reserved for directional indicators (L / R) and status toggles, maintaining clear color separation from combat threat warnings.

  • Deep Atmospheric Canvas: Built on a space-black backdrop with subtle lens flare passes and digital grit to give emissive vector elements an authentic, glowing monitor quality.

Layout Structure & UI Style

  • Symmetrical Edge Framing: Telemetry bars, pitch/roll indicators, and coordinate stamps line the screen borders, keeping the primary central viewport clean and clear for active dogfight tracking.

  • High-Tech Vector Geometry: Features crisp line work, corner brackets, crosshairs, and dynamic reticle rings that expand and contract smoothly based on target lock status.

  • Industrial & Military Conventions: Incorporates technical typography, coordinate stamps (COMM-9388.B2), and in-universe military UI notation (FORCE 2.0, HOLD 3.8) to anchor the design firmly in the Star Wars aesthetic.

Motion Design & Technical Execution

  • Dynamic Target Lock Sequences: Concentric reticle rings use aggressive easing curves to snap toward the TIE Interceptor, expanding and contracting as distance parameters shift.

  • Continuous Telemetry Sweeps: Speed meters and coordinate readouts run on continuous math expressions to reflect real-time velocity changes and flight adjustments.

  • Tactile State Feedback: Action prompts and status toggles utilize fast spring easing and micro-flickers to mimic low-latency military display hardware responding to pilot input.
